"A Friend"

When I first met Jack he was 70 years old. I was just beginning to learn a little bit about computers and the web. I didn't know the first thing about E-mail programs, news programs or how to find files, much less how to create new ones. Jack was very much the exception for a person his age, and already knew all that stuff and much more.

When we visited his and Jean's home that Christmas, he took the time to explain and show me where to attain these "things" and how they should be set up, which ones were beneficial, which ones were free!

Today those things seem minor as my involvement with computers and the web has become much more complex, but at that time it was an important contribution. I had some major obstacles to overcome and learn in order to go on to the next step and Jack's patience and willingness to help was key in my earning the confidence to go forward in a new field.

I will always remember his quiet, confident manner and an all too brief, but meaningful friendship. Thank you, Jack.

COWBOY'S PRAYER
O Lord, I've never lived where churches grow;
I've loved creation better as it stood
That day you finished it, so long ago,
And looked upon your work and called it good.

Just let me live my life as I've begun!
And give me work that's open to the sky;
Make me a partner of the wind and sun,
And I won't ask a life that's soft and high.

Make me as big and open as the plains;
As honest as the horse between my knees;
Clean as the wind that blows behind the rains;
Free as the hawk that circles down the breeze.

Just keep an eye on all that's done and said;
Just right me sometime when I turn aside;
And guide me on the long trail ahead-
That stretches upward towards the Great Divide.
